What is a singing bowl?
A singing bowl is a type of bell that rests flat rather than hanging. When played, it produces a sustained, resonant tone that can be both heard and felt. The sound is created through vibration and friction- either by striking the bowl or circling the rim with a mallet.
This movement produces harmonics, or layered tones that deepen as they continue. A well-made bowl has a clean fundamental tone and a long sustain.
The shape, size, and metal all influence how a bowl sounds. Smaller bowls tend to produce higher frequencies, which are often used to sharpen focus, clear energy, or mark transitions. Larger, thicker bowls resonate with lower frequencies, which tend to feel grounding and are often used for calming, centering, or deeper meditative work.
Mallets also shape the sound. A softer, padded mallet will bring out a deeper, warmer tone. A harder wooden one creates a sharper, more defined strike.

How to use
Singing bowls can be played by striking or by circling the rim. Each method creates a different tone and feel.

To sustain the sound, slowly glide the wooden mallet along the rim. This produces a steady tone with layered harmonics.

To create a short, clear note, gently tap the bowl with a padded mallet. This produces a strong initial vibration with deeper tone.
